Avoid This Mistake Like The Plague If You Want The Job Interview

By Anna Johnson

Here at Resume Writing Pro, we understand that a well-crafted, professional resume and cover letter is key to getting you the right job interviews.

However, being well crafted and professional are not enough. Your resume and cover letter should also be tailored to the organisation and job you're applying for.

That's why, at Resume Writing Pro, we customize every component of your job application - your resume, cover letter and thank-you letter - to ensure they clearly convey that YOU are the best candidate for the position. We even go so far as to incorporate, at your option, a short Job Fulfillment Description (JFD) into your cover letter.

A JFD is nothing more complex than a description of how you plan to do the job. While this can be a separate document, it can also be integrated into your cover letter. This is usually preferable when a recruiter is receiving numerous - sometimes hundreds of - applications, and would probably like to deal with as few pieces of paper as possible!

The upshot, however, is that you should strongly communicate to the recruiter that you understand the company and its needs and the job it needs filled, and that you have a plan for how to meet those needs and do the job.

In a sea of bland resumes that are all about "me" (i.e. the candidate) rather than the employer, this may well highlight you as the best person for the job even before the interview!

So, if you're qualified for the job, and have the perfect resume and cover letter - tailored to the company - you should have every confidence that you'll get the job interview.

Nevertheless, you may have noticed a number of "mass mail" or "mass email" or "resume blast" services. Essentially, they promise to send your resume out to dozens of companies and recruiters all at once.

This may be tempting. After all - here's a chance to quickly get your resume out to a large number of companies. No need to prepare a JFD, customize a cover letter, or tailor your resume.

Well, guess what - there's also no need to polish your shoes for that job interview, either. That's because companies that receive mass-mailed, non-targeted resumes, are more likely to dump them in the garbage can, rather than call you up to invite you to an interview.

Why?

Because mass-mailed or mass-emailed job applications convey the very opposite impression of what you're trying to create!

Instead of coming across as interested in the specific company and job... you come across as being quite indifferent to the company and job.

Rather than appearing as though you genuinely care about the company's problems - and how you're going to solve them - you appear wholly concerned about your need to get a job.

And let's face it, even if the company happens to be hiring... if you send them a generic cover letter and resume, how do you think you'll compare to someone who HAS customized their job application to the job and company?

Please avoid making the mistake of mass-distributing your resume - you'll not only save yourself some money, but your career literally depends on it.

Instead, decide on the companies you want to apply for and, whether or not you use Resume Writing Pro, prepare a unique job application for each one.

Sure, there may be some information that's the same across all the cover letters or resumes you prepare. Especially when it comes to your resume, there's only so many ways you can convey basic facts like your educational background.

However, there ARE several ways to state and position information so that you create the very best impression on the reader... so I urge you to take that into account when preparing your materials. We certainly will if you use Resume Writing Pro!
